We recently hosted a book signing and reception in our New York showroom with the fabulous and talented Campion Platt!

Made to Order, Platt’s first monograph, is a broad representation of the firm’s projects within the last twenty years, accompanied by original drawings, brief personal essays, and lively project descriptions. In addition, the volume provides tips and ideas to help people practice the “Platt approach” on their own.

Projects featured include an 1857 sea captain’s house; a show house in Harlem, New York, where Jay-Z filmed a music video; a loft in Astor Place; and a writer’s retreat for novelist Jay McInerney. Our latest collaboration with Charlotte Moss has just launched!

The Charlotte Moss Passport Collection has hit our showrooms and we are thrilled to unveil our new window in the D&D building here in New York!

The Passport Collection was conceived by Charlotte Moss on a vacation to Istanbul. Inspired by the beautiful patterns and colors of vintage ikat silks from Uzbekistan and other far off destinations, Charlotte translated them into 100% wool, hand-knotted rugs, taking the classic palette of ikat fabrics and freshening it in many of the designs for today’s home. The addition of aqua, citrus and raspberry and tonal gradations in shades of blues and beiges give these ancient patterns a wonderfully modern and updated aesthetic. Patterns and textures … bringing history into the modern home … and just the beginning of the journey…

The four year, across-the-drink collaboration between New York-based Stark and London-based color specialist David Oliver is finally complete. The long-awaited result, Stark Paint, colours by David Oliver, is now available in all 25 showrooms of the to-the-trade manufacturer of carpet, fabric, furniture, and wallcovering.

Stark's new paint division boasts a contemporary palette of 240 colors, all which are available in three finishes: Velvet Emulsion, Porcelain Shell, and Lacquer Gloss. The paints are all water-based with zero VOCs and meet the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED standards.

Oliver, design director of Paint & Paper Library, a London-based interiors company focused on the design and supply of paint, fabric, and wallpaper, also worked with Stark on a two-booklet system of paint charts that highlight the entire collection for designer's sample libraries.

"A paint line was the natural progression for Stark," says Arthur Phillips, executive director of the Stark wall covering division. "This has always been a desirable goal for us, and with Stark Paint, we can now continue to offer our clients a high quality designer product that is environmentally responsible."

Stark Carpet Corporation is deeply saddened by the passing of Randall A. Ridless.

Our relationship with this incredibly talented designer began almost three decades ago. As the industry watched this design star rise, Stark Carpet had the good fortune of being entrusted with many of his floor covering and fabric needs.

We had the pleasure of assisting Randy develop his vision on many projects from concept to reality. Stark Carpet and Randall A Ridless llc worked together to conceptualize, manufacture and ultimately provide the floor coverings for Burberry’s Flagship in London, Bergdorf Goodman Shoe Salon, Van Clef and Arpels stores nationwide, Frette, St. John Knits, Saks Fifth Avenue, I Magnin, Mayflower Inn and Spa, Manhattan House, along with a long and prestigious list of residential clientele.

We are blessed to have the Randall A. Ridless Carpet Collection here at Stark. His nature – inspired, innovative group of designs has proven itself to be timeless, as this collection continues to be a great success. He will forever live on through his brilliant designs.

We feel honored to have shared a long and loyal relationship with this wonderfully gifted man and we will miss his brilliance, his professionalism and his friendship.

Barry Goralnick received a Master of Architecture from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. After apprenticing in Boston and Chicago, he worked for Wayne Berg Architect and Robert A.M. Stern Architects in New York, where he designed and executed many award-winning projects. Barry Goralnick Architects was founded in 1985. From its inception, BGA has specialized in both architecture and interior design.

Mr. Goralnick’s commissions include a long roster of residential and commercial projects. These projects range from apartments, houses, executive offices, brokerage firms, building lobbies, and a synagogue. They have been located from all over the Tri-State area and New England to France. He is a member of the AIA, NYAIA, and NCARB. He has also served on architectural juries and lectured at Parsons School of Design, Pratt Institute, the New School, New York University, and NEOCON in Chicago. Mr. Goralnick is a Registered Architect in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.
Along with his architectural degree, Mr. Goralnick minored in Fine Arts and received a BA in English Literature at Brandeis University and studied literature and Baroque architecture at the University of Reading, England.

In addition, Mr. Goralnick designs a furniture and lighting collection, which is available to designers. He also has an extensive collection of rugs and carpets custom-designed and exclusively available at Stark Carpet.

Mr. Goralnick’s work has appeared in The New York Times, Vanity Fair, Elle Decor, W, HG, House Beautiful, Interior Design, Traditional Home, Southern Accents, Progressive Architecture, Country Living, Better Homes and Gardens, Metropolitan Home, Designer's West, Haute Decor, The Boston Globe, The San Francisco Examiner, The Toronto Sun, The Albany Republican, The Berkshire Eagle, Pronto (Japan), Schoner Wohnen (Germany), Modern Living (Japan), Glamour (Italy), Vogue (Italy), the Showcase of Interior Design and Furniture by Carol Soucek King, Designing for Small Spaces by Dylan Landis, the Waverly Home Book, Timeless Rooms by Bo Niles, and Design with Color by Terri Truco. As you may know Stark has been around for a very long time. When I first started designing more modern product I would constantly hear “wow Stark has things like this”…and “you know I still have my grandmothers Stark rug from…” Phillip Gorrivan is a perfect example. For those of you who don’t know who Phillip Gorrivan is, he’s a very talented NYC based interior designer . He approached me at a House Beautiful luncheon and told me he had an original Stark ‘Billy Baldwin’ rug in his own living room form the 1970’s. I smiled and told him I would love to see it. If a well known interior designer had a 1970’s Stark rug in his living room I needed to see it! We exchanged emails and developed a friendship. He sent me a picture of his living room which I was blown away by!! The mix of the old and new it was so Stark. I told him the vintage Stark is still a running pattern that is made in luxurious linen quality. He told me he had used Stark in a number of different ways and showed me an installation of a hot pink Stark Wallcovering (featured below). This is what Stark is about..we have everything from the classic designs to the of the moment ones. My Grandmother, Nadia, used to tell me as a child never forget your roots but always live for the moment! I try to translate this into my life and my work.

Tinsley Mortimer’s NYC Park avenue apartment has been featured in many home furnishing magazines and design blogs (these pictures are from Habitually Chic one of my favorite design blogs). What everyone else fails to point out is that the grey living room carpet is a Stark carpet. This pattern, Park Square, is actually from the plethora of archived Stark designs. Park Square is a design from the David Hicks era and was resurrected in 2004 by my parents along with the help of their very talented interior designer, Jeffrey Bilhuber. They re-colored the design and used it in their NYC apt (see Stark & Timeless ad above).
I love Tinsley’s apartment. The mix of old and new modern and traditional is what I am all about. I am seeing a swing toward this type of decorating which I like to refer to as “transitional.” I love the richness of the suede walls and the pop of bright blue glass wear in the dining room that offsets the very traditional scenic mural wallpaper. You can see the blue throughout her apt… Blue is one of my favorite colors so much that I named my adorable cocker spaniel “Blue”!

Stark & Fresh is an ad that I developed. The decorators are a dynamic mother daughter duo, Robyn and Sara. They have done ads for us in the past and they are one of NYC great design firms. This ad is especially special to me for many reasons. One being that Sara is my best friend from birth and another being I actually designed the rug that they used. That’s the great thing about working on the other end of the interior design world, I am able to interact with amazing designers and see products that I design end up in people’s homes!

How we got here..

I am the creative director at Stark Carpet, a family owned and operated company that was founded by my grandfather over 60 years ago. As a style maven, I used to spend most of my downtime navigating the fashion blogosphere completely unaware of design blogs. Then one fateful day, at a charity where my mother was being honored (we'll save that for another post), I was seated next to Elle Décor’s fabulous editor in chief Margaret Russell who introduced me to the incredible world of interior design blogs. After immersing myself in as many design blogs as I could find, I had an idea.

Given who I am, my constant surroundings, and what I have access to, I might as well blog myself!! You could say interiors are in my blood. Stark specializes in high end custom designed carpet, fabric, furniture and walIcovering for both the residential and contract market. I spend everyday working in the design mecca that is Stark, meeting and collaborating with top interior designers and editors from all across the design world. This is just a little insight into my mind, what inspires me, and what makes Stark STARK....

These are just a few of my favorite things, thoughts, and inspirations.
