On the Rise

Architectural Digest picks the hottest interior designers to watch for in 2013. We love their pick of Anna Karlin, pictured below. To see the whole list visit architecturaldigest.com

After graduating from the Glasgow School of Art’s graphics program in 2006, Anna Karlin took a position at a prominent design firm in her native London. Two days later she quit. “People are not put on earth to work within such a confined, one-dimensional expression of their creativity,” she says. It’s a bold statement, reflecting her refusal to allow her talent—or ambition—to be hemmed in. She landed at the diverse design agency Marmalade for a couple of years before relocating to New York City, where she now runs her own studio. Karlin bills herself as a “multidisciplinary art director,” tackling jobs ranging from cosmetics packaging to graphics for Thompson Hotels to a planned pop-up shop for H&M. Her attention-getting debut home collection, produced with local artisans, includes brass-finished stools based on chess pieces, elegant handblown glassware, and a workbench-inspired dining table. Karlin describes the made-to-order line—for sale on her website—as “traditional shapes refinished and retweaked.” Following several years of client-driven work, the collection is also a clear declaration of her independent design voice.annakarlin.com

Iris Apfel at Stark

Last week HuffPost's style Senior editor, Brie Dyas, came to our New York showroom to close market week for Stark which debuted the Fall 2012 fabric Collections of Old World Weavers, Lelievre, and Grey Wakins.

Iris, who started Old World Weavers with her husband in 1950, spoke to Dyas about her views on minimalism "more is more, less is a bore", and being curious about yourself.

Lovely Hill-Stead

If you live in Connecticut or want to take road trip in the near future we strongly recommend going to the Hill-Stead Museum. After Stark was fortunate to be a part of their "Green Room" renovation we couldn't stop thinking of the beautiful work or grounds the museum offers.

Hill-Stead was built in 1901 by the pioneering female architect, Theodate Pope Riddle. Riddle, one of the first American women architects, built the Colonial Revival-style house for her parents and their impressive art Collection. The Collection includes works by Claude Monet, Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas, and  Édouard Manet.

The "Green Room" will have Stark's carpet in a few weeks so check back for an update!!

Persian Rugs

Persian style rugs have been made for thousands of years and continue to be made and sold throughout the world due to many skilled artisans preserving the art of weaving. The styles and designs have been passed down generation to generation among family members with some families passing down the materials as well which makes these rugs the highest quality in the world. Persian style rugs are usually designed with one or more motif, each with different meanings depending on the area the rug was woven in. There are many different types of Persian style rugs with Oriental being the most widely known. Soumak Persian style designs are widely popular in Western Europe because of their ability to go into all types of décor, including contemporary, modern and traditional.
